The nature of this seal combination allows designers to use large clearances and limit piston length with integrated bearing rings.
The assembly consists of a seal and two her L-shaped bearings. The center of the seal is rubber bonded to two U-shaped bases of rubberized fabric and compressed by the housing to provide an effective low pressure seal. As pressure increases, the rubber puts tension on the U-section, causing it to deform towards the housing, increasing the sealing surface area and improving the seal.
Rubberized fabrics are used to protect rubber because they are strong and durable and, combined with their ability to retain lubricants, help reduce friction and reduce wear. The seal is supported at both ends by polyacetal bearings sized to accommodate the pressure exerted on the seal to prevent extrusion damage and to support side loading of the piston.
